Woman Orders Fancy Item from Saks Fifth Avenue and Gets Can of Tuna Instead

Since opening its doors in New York in 1924, Saks Fifth Avenue has built up a reputable name in fashion. The “retail establishment” has been around for nearly a centennial, selling luxurious and high-quality designer brands. By 1931, Saks had its own in-house designer and began carrying designer fashion from France, solidifying the luxury apparel retailer’s glamorous reputation. However, a woman recently went viral on TikTok after her online purchase was significantly less luxurious than she’d anticipated.

Saks Sends a Surprise

A TikTok user named Bailey, TikTok name @howdyfolks72, shared a video that has garnered nearly a million views, causing some followers to rethink online shopping. Bailey began by stating, “Hello everyone, I made a TikTok account just so that I could share what just happened to me, because I’m the most perplexed and confused I’ve ever been in my entire life.”

Next, she explains that she got a coupon in an email from Saks, offering her a discount of 15-20% off of one item. She opted for a gorgeous Dolce & Gabbana ashtray for $225. “I don’t need to hear the judgment, that’s what I wanted so that’s what I picked,” she commented. Bailey waited on the arrival of her Saks Fifth Avenue package until Jan. 28th. She opened the box, noting that she had to use a knife to cut through the cellophane. Much to her surprise she found a can of Bumble Bee tuna instead.

Sharing an Odd Experience

In the video, she further explains, “This is the back, you can see it’s Mediterranean porcelain, made in Italy, supposed to be this blue and white ashtray,” she said. “However when I opened it um this is what I found, a can of tuna, of albacore tuna.”

And there’s a ring in the form…but there’s nothing underneath, it’s just the tuna,” she said. “I don’t know if someone from the warehouse took it and replaced it and did some cellophane with the hairdryer, I don’t know but this is the most f-cking expensive can of tuna I’ve ever bought.” She added.

Many people have responded to the video, some sharing their thoughts. While others have shared their own surprise online purchases. “Kinda fishy,” one person joked. “Never in a million years could I have predicted this!” Exclaimed another. “This is the third video I’ve seen this week of an insane customer experience at Saks. What on earth is going on?” Disclosed another person.

Lastly, someone shared, “This happened to me. I ordered Loewe sneakers from Saks and got a random jacket. Not quite tuna fish LOL. Customer service was great.” The OP responded, sharing, “I was about to pull trig on a pair of Manolo’s from them. Thank god this catastrophe happened before I did that!”

Saks Responds to Her Confusion

On a mission to have her problem resolved, Bailey reached out to Saks Fifth Avenue customer service, who gladly offered their support. Bailey waited only a few more days before receiving a second package from Saks Fifth Avenue. On February 2nd, she uploaded another video of her opening the second package. After all, countless people were invested in what Bailey described as “Tuna Gate”. “I’m so scared right now,” she said, opening the box. “It looks like the same box,” she added. “Here’s this, it’s not wrapped in plastic. Don’t know what that means.” Fortunately, this time around it was exactly what she’d expected.

A spokesperson for Saks Fifth Avenue disclosed to PEOPLE, “”We take our customer experience very seriously. Across the retail industry, there has been an increase in online fraud, particularly related to returns. Luxury continues to be a target given its high price points, and as such, we have implemented more rigorous steps in our return process, including additional reviews and stronger authentication.” Commenting on “Tuna-Gate”.

Our highly automated fulfillment centers manage millions of shipments every year, but it is not acceptable for even a small number of our customers to have this experience. Regarding the Dolce & Gabbana ashtray, given the unusual nature of this situation, our team carefully investigated, and it appears that the item originally sent to the customer had been a fraudulent return. Upon learning of the situation, our team made a replacement order on behalf of the customer. We apologize for any inconvenience as this is not reflective of the luxury shopping experience for which Saks is known.” They concluded.

Online Oddities

Although Bailey got one of the more bizarre surprises, there are numerous people online with similar problems. In fact, the internet is teeming with stories and memes of people sharing their “what I ordered” vs. “what I got” experiences. In many cases, people have ordered what they thought were full-sized items, only to be shipped a much smaller or doll-size version. One woman shared that she thought she was buying wrapping paper and instead ended up with a poster of herself. Others have ordered what they believed to be glamorous clothing or baked goods, only to get a sloppier or less elegant version.

Luckily, social media platforms are a great place for people to come together and share their own experiences, be if for the joy of sharing a smile. Or to warn others about their own “what I ordered” vs. “what I got” experiences. Seemingly, Saks was more than accommodating in this situation. Furthermore, based on a comment from one follower, the company still takes pride in its incredible reputation.
