This prompted a swift and seemingly displeased response from Johnson. She contradicted DeGeneres, stating, “Actually, no, that’s not the truth, Ellen, you were invited. No, last time I was on the show, last year, you gave me a bunch of slack about not inviting you. But I didn’t even know you wanted to be invited.”
“Well, who wouldn’t want to be invited to a party?” DeGeneres quickly prompted back. “But I didn’t even know you liked me,” Johnson insisted. This led to a rather striking comeback from DeGeneres who insisted she had always liked the actor and wouldn’t have invited her on the show so often if she wasn’t a fan. “But I did invite you, and you didn’t come,” Johnson insisted.

“Oh yeah, I had that thing.” In the wake of the recent anniversary of the Dakota Johnson interview on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, people took to X (formerly Twitter) to collectively cringe over the awkward moment from years ago.
“Four years ago today Dakota Johnson ended Ellen’s whole career with ‘Actually that’s not the truth Ellen’.” One person penned on the popular social media platform. A second added: “Dakota really clowned Ellen at her own show.” While a third remarked: “4 years ago, Dakota Johnson called out Ellen DeGeneres for lying about not being invited to her birthday party.”
Ellen DeGeneres faced previous criticism for her treatment of guests
Earlier this year, Emily Ratajkowski criticized the host for questioning Taylor Swift about her dating history. Describing the exchange as ‘messed up,’ criticizing DeGeneres for her approach, and underscoring concerns about the show’s hosting style.
Dakota Johnson’s recent interview with Ellen DeGeneres is not the first time the actress has experienced an awkward encounter on the show. Her discomfort this time around serves as a reminiscent reflection of her 2018 appearance on Ellen while promoting her films Suspiria and Bad Times at the El Royale.
During that earlier interview, DeGeneres made snide remarks about the length of Johnson’s skirt, jokingly offering her a blanket and attempting to cover up her legs with an index card and tissues.
