Two-Year-Old Girl Shut Down Rude Cashier, Her Mother Couldn’t Be Any More Proud!

Kids really do say the darndest things. And often, they really seem to have more wisdom and common sense than most adults! And when it comes to little two-year-old Sophia, she sure knows what is what! It all happened when her mom took her to the toy store to choose a toy for being a good girl and learning how to successfully use the potty.

According to Brandi Benner, Sophia’s mom, her daughter wants to be a doctor when she grows up. Therefore, Sophia chose a doctor doll. Of course, that was not surprising to her mom, but, it was surprising for the cashier at the store.

Sophie had not just chosen a doctor doll, but this particular doll was black. Neither Brandi nor little Sophia had even thought about her choice until the cashier mentioned it. She looked at Sophia’s choice of doll and asked if she was certain that was the doll she wanted, insisting that they had dolls available that looked more like Sophia did. Brandi heard the cashier say “But she doesn’t look like you. We have lots of other dolls that look more like you.” But, before she could get a word in, her smart little daughter took the words out of her mouth.

Her response was PERFECT

According to her mom, Sophie simply replied in the most perfect way when she told the cashier in response.

Yes, she does. She’s a doctor like I’m a doctor. And I’m a pretty girl and she’s a pretty girl. See her pretty hair? And see her stethoscope?

Thankfully, the cashier chose not to say a word more than “oh okay,” which was probably for the best because Brandi was not impressed with her in the least! After posting her story on Facebook in 2017 along with this adorable photo of little Doctor Sophia and her Doctor doll, it’s racked up a million likes and countless comments and shares! The caption to her post was as follows

“Nick and I told Sophia that after 1 whole month of going poop on the potty, she could pick out a special prize at Target. She, of course, picked a new doll. The obsession is real. While we were checking out, the cashier asked Sophia if she was going to a birthday party. We both gave her a blank stare. She then pointed to the doll and asked Sophia if she picked her out for a friend. Sophia continued to stare blankly and I let the cashier know that she was a prize for Sophia being fully potty trained. The woman gave me a puzzled look and turned to Sophia and asked, “Are you sure this is the doll you want, honey?” Sophia finally found her voice and said, “Yes, please!” The cashier replied, “But she doesn’t look like you. We have lots of other dolls that look more like you.” I immediately became angry, but before I could say anything, Sophia responded with, “Yes, she does. She’s a doctor like I’m a doctor. And I’m a pretty girl and she’s a pretty girl. See her pretty hair? And see her stethoscope?” Thankfully the cashier decided to drop the issue and just answer, “Oh, that’s nice.” This experience just confirmed my belief that we aren’t born with the idea that color matters. Skin comes in different colors just like hair and eyes and every shade is beautiful.”

Tons of support for a smart little girl!

As you can imagine, Sophie gained tons of fans for her smart response, with many people agreeing that Brandi was doing an amazing job raising her daughter. One commenter said,

Your daughter is going to grow up to be a respectable member of this world and if the world had more people like her it would be a better place.

Another said her daughter too chose dolls of different color skin:

Freaking awesome!!!! My daughter asked for a doll two christmases ago. She would have been 4 then. She SPECIFICALLY asked for a BLACK baby!!! Proud mom moment right there!

One thing many people forget is that once upon a time, black-skinned dolls were not even made. This meant that children of color grew up only playing with white-skinned dolls. These kids had no choice or ability to select a doll that “looked like they did”.

Looking at many of the comments, it would appear that racism, even if not intentional, is still a massive issue. A very sad, but very real reality. Luckily, children like little Sophia and her stellar mom give us all a little hope that things are changing!
