Prince Charles Responds to Claim That He Questioned Complexion of Meghan & Harry’s Baby

A spokesman for Prince Charles has rejected the claim that he had made a racist comment toward Prince Harry and Meghan’s child. In his book, Brothers And Wives: Inside The Private Lives of William, Kate, Harry and Meghan, Christopher Andersen writes a story where Charles wonders about the complexion of their children. The spokesman affirmed, “This is fiction and not worth further comment.

Prince Charles Rejects Allegation of Making a Racist Comment

The alleged conversation in the book takes place when Harry and Meghan became engaged in 2017. Charles was sitting with his wife Camilla, when he said, “I wonder what the children will look like?”

Camilla was “somewhat taken aback” and responded, “Well, absolutely gorgeous, I’m certain”. But Charles lowered his voice and said, “I mean, what do you think their children’s complexion might be?

Anderson alleged that this conversation became twisted by courtiers to sound more racist. And this more toxic version reached Harry and Meghan.

Essentially, the book insinuated that Charles was the unnamed “senior royal” Meghan said in her interview with Oprah Winfrey had “raised concern” about how dark her son’s skin might look. In fact, Meghan, who is biracial, said her son Archie was denied the prince title because of these concerns over his complexion. [1]

How to Get the Title of Prince and Princess

The rules about royal titles come from a letter patent issued by King George V in November 1917. There, George V writes that the great-grandchildren of the monarch wouldn’t have the title of princes or princesses, with the exception of the eldest son of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales. Meaning, Prince George, the eldest son of Prince William automatically gets the title of the prince while Archie does not.

However, in December 2012, the Queen issued her own letter patent. In it, she declared all of Prince William’s children get the title of princes and princesses, referring to Prince George’s siblings, Charlotte and Louis. In the meantime Archie and his siblings can get these titles once Prince Charles becomes king, making them the grandchildren of the monarch. Meghan seems aware of this since she mentioned the “George V or George VI convention” in the interview, adding Archie could become a prince “when Harry’s dad becomes king”. Still, she claimed “they want to change the convention for Archie” to deliberately stop him from becoming a prince even after Charles becomes king. [2]

After Meghan and Harry’s tell-all interview with Oprah, Buckingham Palace released a statement in response. “The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan. While some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately“. Then added, “Harry, Meghan, and Archie will always be much-loved family members.[3]

Rejecting the Royal Life

On January 8, 2020, Meghan and Harry revealed that they are removing themselves from the royal family. They’ve since moved to California with Archie and had a second child, Lili. “They are loving life as a family of four,” said makeup artist Daniel Martin. “They’ve struck a rhythm as a foursome.

The couple is now financially independent from Buckingham Palace. Since then, they have made deals with Spotify and Netflix and created an organization called Archewall. The foundation is aligned with the Aspen Institute Commission on Information Disorder to fight the spread of misinformation; the Center for Humane Technology; Global Citizen to help distribute Covid-19 vaccines all over the world, UCLA Center for Critical Internet Inquiry; and World Central Kitchen to help world hunger. Archewell also includes a Production program with Netflix to “utilize the power of storytelling to embrace our shared humanity and duty to truth through a compassionate lens”. They have announced two projects, a docu-series called Heart of Invictus and an animated series called Pearl. Archewell’s collaboration with Spotify will produce shows and podcasts “that build community through shared experiences, powerful narratives, and universal values.”
