Angry at Your Ex? This Zoo Will Let You Name a Cockroach After Them and Feed to an Animal

Looking for a Valentine’s Day gift that will leave a mark? The San Antonio Zoo’s latest offering might be exactly what you want. However, this greeting can only be dedicated to those exes who have left you jilted, for whatever reason. After all, the greeting is not exactly an act of affection.

So what is this special offering? The zoo is offering to give a cockroach the name of your ex for the low price of $10. The personnel will then proceed to feed the said namesake to an animal. The message is cold but serves the purpose quite well. Till now, we have to admit, this is one of the best ways to let someone know that you have no more interest in them.

The San Antonio Zoo’s Offering Is Extremely Innovative

This offering from the San Antonio Zoo is not a one-off event either. They actually offer it every year! It is a fundraiser called “Cry Me a Cockroach”. On the official website of the zoo, the fundraiser’s aim is “to support the vision of the zoo in securing a future for wildlife in Texas and around the world.” If cockroaches are too much for you to handle, you can also choose a vegetable, which will cost you $5. There’s also another tier for those looking to send a larger message than an insect. They can choose a live rat, and it will cost them $25.

Everyone who takes part in the fundraiser will be sent a digital card for Valentine’s Day from the San Antonio Zoo. The card will be a symbol of the support they gave the zoo. To make sure the ex gets the message, donors can also choose to have a card sent to the former lover. That card will tell them all about the vegetable, rat, or cockroach that was given their name and fed to an animal. Here too, a special tier is available for those wishing to make sure the message serves the purpose. For $150, the ex’s card will include a customized video message chronicling the last moments of their sacrificial namesake.

According to Cyle Perez, the zoo’s public relations director, the yearly event is quite popular. In 2022, there were over 8000 patrons. The donors not only came from all over the 50 states, but also from more than 30 countries. In 2023, the record was en route to being broken, with the most common names being “Adam”, “Zach”, and “Ray”. If you are interested, you will need to send in the name before February 14th.
