For some parents, naming their baby is a beautiful challenge. For others, it can be as simple as naming them after their favorite things. Regardless, it is safe to say that there is a considerable amount of love and thought put into naming a baby. On that note, did you know that there are professional baby names?
33-year-old Taylor Humphrey, a graduate of NYU, is one such professional. In 2021 alone, she claims to have named over 100 babies! And her services are not cheap – they can cost up to $10,000 per individual newborn.
What’s In A Baby’s Name?
You might be wondering – how much work can naming a baby be that it can have such a high price tag? Well, Humphreys has different questionnaires and services catering to a variety of clients – from normal parents to parents looking to make their baby a model for their business.
Humphrey’s career started in 2015 on Instagram. Her account, called @whatsinababyname was originally meant for simply listing interesting baby names. However, the account became extremely popular and Humphrey took the chance to make a business out of it.

According to Humphrey, her service is an important support service. In an interview with PEOPLE, she said: “While it’s easy to say that I name people’s babies for a living, my work is so much deeper and more nuanced than that. My job is to hold space, and provide spiritual, emotional, and physical support for my clients as they progress through the major life transition of becoming a parent.”
Choosing the best baby names ever is not the only work that Humphrey does. Her other services include creating baby name-centered content, conducting reiki sessions, and being a doula. Her content includes viewer suggestions asking for pairing names and “name regret”.

A Different Kind Of Fulfilment
But why do parents seek out Humphrey’s help? She reckons because the task can become too tiring for the parents. She says that a lot of her clients are searching for names for their 3rd or 4th child. Other times, the names the parent chose turned out to be the same as someone else’s child.
Moreover, Humphrey also thinks that it is more important for the name to suit the baby than to satisfy the parent. She says that the goodness of a name does not depend on the parents’ opinion. She took the example of the names Elon Musk and grimes chose for their children.
Humphreys explain that she was only looking for some method to share with the world how much she loved baby names. Never in her wildest dreams did she ever think that it would turn into a booming business.
Perhaps baby naming is where the money’s at!
