Woman’s Viral Post Is A Warning To Never Smash Cake In Someone’s Face

Everyone has heard of food fights. Maybe you’ve witnessed one firsthand or only seen one in an old family-rated movie. Up until now, it may have seemed like innocent fun, apart from the waste of food. Sure, smashing a cake into someone’s face may be a very tempting itch to scratch. However, it can actually be more dangerous than you would think. And, from what we’ve recently learned, never smash cake in someone’s face!

Why you should never smash cake in someone’s face

Often layered cakes and desserts can be held together with skewers or chopsticks. This prevents any mishaps that may happen when transporting them from the bakery to their destination at whichever birthday or wedding they may become the main attraction of that day. This obviously helps to ensure the cake’s safety from toppling over. It also makes the prospect of smashing it in someone’s face a rather hazardous one indeed. And, this is exactly why one should never smash cake in someone’s face!

Cake smashing, or more accurately, mushing the birthday celebrator into their cake as they take their first bite is actually an old tradition. This strangely hilarious practice is known as la mordida, which first began in Mexico. The Spanish word “mordida” means “bite,” which makes it easy to believe that this was, in fact, a Mexican celebratory act before gaining popularity in the USA. The tradition of smashing a cake in someone’s face becomes rather dangerous because not all cakes are created equal.

Single-layer cakes may be safe, but multilayer cakes and tiered desserts are probably a bad idea. They often have wooden skewer sticks or sometimes even PVC pipes inserted in their center to prevent them from falling. Obviously, these may be very helpful for the baker for keeping their goods intact. However, these objects can be extremely harmful if smashed into the face of an unsuspecting birthday celebrator.

Unfortunate events

This is exactly what happened to an unfortunate woman called Gimā. She quite literally got the wrong end of the stick, as they say. After the incident where she was wounded in her right eye, she posted a warning to others from her Facebook account, saying:

“There are pastries that place these chopsticks inside the cakes, so think twice before you push someone’s head into celebrations.

The post included several photos, one of which was extremely graphic. This image showed the chopstick still in her eye. While the other showed her looking far happier in comparison. Wearing a handsome eyepatch over her wounded right eye. Her friends had knowingly smashed her head into a cake while celebrating. But, in the process, did her some serious damage! It didn’t take long before the post went completely viral and was shared over 300,000 times. It also received over 14,000 comments and reactions in just a few days. Most of the people offered their sympathy for Gimā’s situation. Also, a good deal of the commenters felt the tradition was rather silly in the first place. The warning she put out was certainly heard in the end, it seems.

Not the first time

However, this wasn’t the first birthday disaster with a cake smashing gone wrong. Back in 2016, it was recorded that a teenage girl was knocked out cold when her face was forced into her cake during her 16th birthday celebration. While she may have walked away relatively unscathed and lived to tell the tale, the ordeal was completely unnecessary. The intention behind the “la mordida” tradition may have always been completely fun and harmless, and usually, no one gets hurt, but without knowing you could be giving someone a rather unpleasant ambulance ride for their birthday.

The general sentiment of the comments below Gimā’s Facebook was that the tradition should end. “Stick or no-stick, just don’t do it.” stated one commenter. Others question the baker’s integrity, saying the cake should have a warning label. “A warning should be given with the cake …. even if it’s not smashed in someone’s face, it could still hurt someone,” Dejo Daehsh said below the original Facebook post.

The bakery may have intended for the cake to be sliced and eaten rather than smashed into the face of someone. However, they could have thought ahead to be safe. A few thought that cake smashing was a rather rude and brutish tradition.“I’ll rather stay alone rather than inviting such kind of friends on my birthday. Better not to make such friends first of all,” said Rose Nimah in her Facebook comment. It’s fair to say the act does waste a decent and specially prepared cake, too. Not to mention it may have been expensive in many cases.

Stay safe and never smash cake in someone’s face!

Perhaps, after such a reaction, some caution is necessary. Birthdays may be harmless, but smashing people into their cake clearly is not always a good idea!. Stay out of the hospital on your birthday and rather try jello, trifle, or a friendly batch of cupcakes.
