You never know where your life will take you. Sometimes, all we can do is trust those who are kind and try to be the best person we can be. Who knows how things will turn out? We know you’ll be moved by this incredible story just like we were.
When Betty and Blair were only 15-years-old, their mother kicked them out on the streets. As twins, the two girls had an unbreakable bond. Even the cruel acts of their mother could not separate them. They were used to their mom’s uncaring attitude, but this was the first time she had ever left them homeless.
At the age of 8, the twins had to leave school to take care of their mom, Carla. She wasn’t ill or unhealthy, but she had a bit of a drinking problem and would nearly burn the house down, or forget to feed the cat. So, the girls dropped out and took care of the household. Carla would regularly date different men and barely had enough money to feed Betty and Blair one meal a day. When the twins had their 14th birthday, Carla introduced them to her new boyfriend, Eddy.
Eddy didn’t care for the twins and disliked them being in the house with him and Carla. So, on their 15th birthday, Carla told the girls they had to leave. She packed a black trash bag full of their clothes, threw the bag outside, and told the girls to leave and never come back. Eddy changed the locks that night and the twins knew they faced a difficult path ahead. But, sticking together would make things better, as it always had gotten through the toughest of times.
Trusting
Betty and Blair did what they had to get by, but they never stole anything, and they never robbed anyone. They would go through dumpsters to try and find food, and sometimes they would get lucky. It was San Fransisco, and sometimes people threw away perfectly good food, along with nice items. Of course, the stuff they found would have a crack or a chip in it, but it was usually something the girls could resell.
Being homeless in a big city means that people often assume the worst about you. Betty and Blair would happen to resell items to certain shops, but the store owners would assume the times were stolen. So, the girls usually ended up having the police call on them when they tried to pawn an item. That’s how they became friends with Officer Trudy.
Officer Trudy knew the girls were innocent and merely a victim of circumstance. She would try to find the girls a shelter to stay in when she could and give them food when she had extra donations come in. The twins quickly became good friends with the officer, even though they didn’t trust the other cops in the precinct.
It had been 3 days since the girls last had a meal, and Betty was getting desperate.
“I’m going to go try to find a new area to search in tonight. Maybe if I find something decent I can sell it to Mr. Harpley.”
Blair tried to reason with Betty, but quietly knew she would also need to eat something soon.
“You know he always calls the cops on us when we try to sell him anything. He hates homeless people. And we don’t even know if Officer Trudy will be working tonight. What if we have to stay overnight in that scary place? I don’t know Betty…”
Betty told Blair they didn’t have a choice, there weren’t any scraps to eat and they had to do something.
Choices
Officer Trudy pulled up to the scene with Betty and Blair sitting on the curb next to an animated Mr. Harpley.
“I told you these girls stole this radio! That’s why I called you! Arrest them!”
“We will look into it, Mr. Harpley. Have a good night.”
Officer Trudy rushed the girls into her car and shut the doors. As she got in and put her seatbelt on, she looked in the rearview mirror and said excitedly, “I’ve been looking everywhere for you two!”
Betty looked at Blair with confusion in her eyes and asked Officer Trudy what they had done wrong.
“Are we in trouble? I swear we didn’t do anything wrong please don’t arrest us!”
“No, nothing like that. But, I am going to have to take you two to the station. There is something we need to discuss and it is quite important.”
As the two sat down in Officer Trudy’s office, they wondered what kind of trouble they were in. They knew they could trust Officer Trudy, but why were they at the police station if they weren’t in trouble? Surely, one of them must have done something wrong.
Lifestyle
Officer Trudy walked into her office and told the girls they had nothing to worry about.
“I want you to relax, please girls. There is nothing to worry about. I am going to take you down the hall to a lawyer named Rita. She will tell you everything, okay?”
So, the three walked down the hall and entered Rita’s office. She was sitting at a nice desk, surrounded by pretty ornaments. The twins immediately liked Rita. They saw her holding a piece of paper and smiling when the twins walked in. As she set her gaze upon them, and Officer Trudy, her eyes went wide.
“Is this them? Oh my goodness, is this Betty and Blair?”
Rita explained to the girls that they had a grandmother who recently passed away. Carla’s mother, Brandy, always tried to reach out to her granddaughters but Carla kept her away. She never told the girls about their grandmother, so, they never knew she existed. When Rita told the twins they had a long-lost relative who passed away, they didn’t quite know how to feel about it.
Then, Rita told them something incredible.
“Betty, Blair, there is something you need to know. Brandy, your grandmother, left you everything in her estate. You get her mansion and her millions of dollars. She knew about the two of you, but your mother wouldn’t let her see you or contact you. So, she wanted you two to have everything she could never give you when she was alive.”
Not believing their ears, the two girls hugged each other and started crying. They were starving, homeless, and at a police station, but their lives had just changed in the most amazing way.
Future
Betty and Blair ended up using a good portion of the money Brandy left them to build a homeless shelter in their area. They made sure that no young adults ever had to go through what they went through. Not knowing where your next meal comes from is a scary thought, and they wanted to help the community.
