This Midwife’s Realistic Demonstrations On How Big A Cervix Gets During Vaginal Childbirth Are Going Mega Viral

How much do you know about women’s health? Even if you are a woman, chances are not that much. That’s why this certified nurse and midwife is educating people on TikTok about all things related to the female body and women’s health. In her latest viral video, she is teaching people how big a cervix gets during childbirth. Needless to say, people are shocked. (1)

Woman’s TikTok That Shows How Big A Cervix Gets During Childbirth Goes Viral

Sarah Pringle, aka midwifemama, is a certified nurse/midwife who began making TikTok videos with her daughter during quarantine last year. She posted a funny little video about speculums last year and, to her surprise, began to gain followers. (1)

“I realized that people want to know about their bodies and their health. This led me to create educational content featuring common office procedures, women’s health products, and the basics of childbirth,” she explained in an interview with Buzzfeed. (1)

Since then, she’s posted videos about everything from where the tampon actually sits inside the vagina to what the doctor is actually checking during a pelvic exam. (2) Her most viral video to date, however, is one that demonstrates how big a cervix gets during childbirth. (1)

Sarah uses the same models in her videos to teach nursing and midwife students how to check for cervical dilations and effacement (how the cervix is stretching and getting thinner). (1, 3)

“In pregnancy, cervical dilation can help determine the medication needed to induce labor, check labor progression, and assess for preterm labor,” she said. (1)

She says her videos are popular because people are curious and want to know about their help. Women, especially, want to have their questions about reproductive health, pregnancy, and childbirth answered. (1)

Oh, and in case it is still unclear, the cervix dilates around 10 cm (4 inches) to accommodate most full-term baby’s heads. (4)

A TikTok Health Advocate

Sarah’s goal is to educate and empower women to get the health care they require. She teaches women that they are in the driver’s seat of their care and they should always feel comfortable asking their healthcare practitioner any and all questions. If they don’t feel that way, then they should most definitely seek out a different provider. (1)

Lastly, she says that education is the missing key for people getting the care they deserve. When you have a base of knowledge about your body and what’s happening inside it, you can ask informed questions. You also know when to question what your healthcare provider is telling you. (1)

“It’s also important for people to know that they are in charge of their bodies and their care and are capable of making informed decisions,” she said. “Education is empowering and helps people to advocate for themselves in health care. And education can be fun!” (1)
