Couple, both 100, die just hours apart after being married for 79 years

Sometimes it’s just nice to read about heartfelt moments and warming events. In a world riddled with illness, financial ruin, and constant threats of war, we need a gentle nudge every now and then from moments that remind us of the good out there. We love good love stories, we love Hubert and June’s love story even more.

With eight decades of marriage and a commitment like no other, June and Hubert Malicote have passed away just hours apart at the astonishing age of 100. Their epic love story came to an end last week in a hospice in Hamilton, Ohio. June’s health had been deteriorating for a while, and she was placed in end-of-life care just days after Thanksgiving.

Hubert soon followed the love of his life. 76-year-old Sam, their son watched his father struggle without his wife, knowing she was fading and made the decision for his father to once again reunite with her. They shared a room at the facility and both remained in a coma for 5 days before passing.

Dying from a broken heart

Hubert passed away on the 30th of November at 9 pm from what could only be described as a broken heart and his wife went the same way approximately 20 hours later on the 1st of December, 6 pm. “They went out together,” Sam shared. “I feel sad, but I shouldn’t. Who can expect to live a life like that? They lived a long, happy life together and they were devoted to God and the family.

Hubert and June both grew up in lovely Kentucky and met through the church they both attended in 1941. The couple exchanged vows one year later when they were both in their 20s and Hubert headed off to perform his active duties for the US Navy. After that, they settled in Hamilton and began their journey of married life together.

Homemaking suited June well

Hubert found a job working in the financial and retail field for a technology company called Diebold Inc. June became a stay-at-home mom and raised their three children, who now have 7 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren!

The couple has made headlines more than once

They celebrated their milestone 79th wedding anniversary this past June and spoke with Today’s Parents about their relationship and how they made marriage work for so many years. They never got into arguments, instead working together through their differences. He did, however, acknowledge that life has its problems sometimes.

Hubert said that he could never imagine life without June. They survived everything together from the Great Pandemic to Covid-19. “We didn’t go through life without problems, but we would never do anything to hurt each other,’ he said. “If there’s controversy, you might have to walk away for a couple of minutes. Then you come back in and change the subject or you work it out.”

What a sad, but beautiful story. Anyone could just hope to find someone who cares so deeply for them as Hubert and June cared for each other. A love story that sounds like it came from a fairytale. Taking day by day, focusing on what they loved most about each other.
