New Data Reveals Surprising Number of Trump Voters Regret Their Decision

Since taking office in February, American president Donald Trump has been, for better or worse, making massive waves in the political climate of the United States and around the world. Both those who did vote for him and those that did not have expressed concern over the uncertainty in terms of the economy and the stability of the country in the wake of many of Trump’s executive orders and the seeming crumbling international relations between the US and countries around the world, including former allies. This has led to a rhetoric that there is an overwhelming number of voters who regret voting for Trump, and would vote differently if the election were held today. Is the Trump regret really that high, though? This poll found that, actually, no it isn’t.

It is not incorrect to say that many of Trump’s actions have not worried hundreds of thousands of Americans, including his own supporters, at least a little bit. A poll done alongside the University of Massachusetts Amherst survey found that 26% of Trump’s 2024 supporters have varying levels of doubt about voting for the current president. This means that 74% are still feeling confident about their choice. From there, 19% said they feel confident about their vote but do have some concerns, and 4% said they have mixed feelings.  Despite the percentage of those feeling uncertain, however, the poll found that if the election were to happen again today, only 2% said they would vote differently and another 1% they might have voted differently. An additional 1% said they simply would not vote.

While the majority of Trump voters are still confident in their choice, uncertainty stemming from the current administration’s policies is causing some nervousness among Republican voters. This uncertainty could potentially lead to changes in their voting behavior in the future. With the midterm elections still a few months away, whether or not this number grows, shrinks, or stays the same will likely largely depend on whether or not the risks Trump seems to be taking, such as with aggressive trade policies, will improve the country’s situation or make it worse.

A less talked about but equally important statistic is how many of those who voted for Trump’s opponent, vice president Kamala Harris, still feel good about their decision. The truth is, the results weren’t that different. 78% of voters said that they still felt confident in their decision, while 4% said they are confident but have some concerns, and 3% said they have mixed feelings about their vote. A slight difference is that just 1% of Kamala voters said they would vote differently if they could go back, and a surprising 14% said that, if they could do it over, they simply wouldn’t have voted.

At the end of the day, polls are just that – polls. What actually matters is how many people actually come out and vote on election days, whether it be primaries, midterms, or presidential elections. There is no question that millions of Americans, including some of those who voted for Trump, are feeling rather uneasy right now. Trump has been making some bold statements and making some decisions that have been surprising, to say the least. For most citizens, who don’t know his strategy or understand some of the decisions he has made recently, every day is a what will Trump do today situation. Time will tell as to whether or not the actions the president has been taking will improve the economy, safety, and livability of the United States or if it will do the exact opposite.

The Bottom Line

The poll results highlight the differing levels of regret among voters who supported both Donald Trump and Kamala Harris. It is also important to note that you could do a new poll every week and the results could change each time. Approval levels ebb and flow with the daily decisions that the president makes as well as the different events that take place around the world. While a segment of Trump supporters have expressed doubts about their vote, the majority of Harris voters remain confident in their choice. The upcoming political landscape and economic conditions will likely shape voters’ sentiments and decision-making processes in future elections.
