Poor Boy Pays for Old Lady’s Groceries, His Granny Gets $230k to Pay for Treatment Days Later – a Short Story

If you were in the position to help someone, we are sure you would do it, wouldn’t you? That is exactly what Jason did, the boy in our story today, which was inspired by the readers of AmoMama. His kind gesture ended up being his grandmothers saving grace. Sometimes we meet the right people at just the right time and it’s just undeniable that our paths were meant to cross!

A Kind Gesture

Jason stood behind an older woman in the queue at the grocery store. He looked to see the other ques moving along swiftly, he wondering what was taking so long with the purchase ahead of him. He watched as the woman dug around in her large handbag, obviously trying to find something. Frantically, the woman said to the cashier how sorry she was, it appeared she had misplaced her wallet. Jason overheard the cashier tell her she would have to come back and do her shopping later. The lady seemed annoyed as she sighed to herself.

Jason was only 19-years-old and did not have much money at all. Still, he tapped the woman on her shoulder and told her not to worry about it, he’d pay for her groceries so she would not need to make an entire trip back to do her shopping all over again. The woman was ecstatic, thanking Jason profusely. She promised to pay him back to which he responded there was no need. Even though Jason was meant to be saving money, he still was okay with being out of pocket. He told the woman that maybe one day the universe would reward him for a good deed.

Jason and the woman walked out of the store together. She introduced herself to him as Mandy. She told Jason that she had a daughter his age and she was sick at home, so he’d really helped her out as she did not want to be away from home too long or too often. Mandy offered Jason a ride home, and they exchanged numbers.

Paying Her Debt

Mandy got home and went to check on her daughter, Lucinda. She’d been quite ill with pneumonia but was making a full recovery. Mandy told Lucinda about Peter, and about how kind he had been to help her. Two weeks later and Lucinda was back on her feet, she and Mandy decided to pay Peter a visit and to finally give him his money back. The two of them hopped into the car and made their way to Peters’s home, where Mandy had dropped him off. Arriving at the old but well-kept home, Lucinda suggested to her mother that it did not look like they had much money, so it was even more heart-warming that Jason had helped her. Mandy agreed, and the pair made their way to the front door.

Jason opened the door after they knocked, he seemed surprised that Mandy had come back. She handed him his money and introduced Lucinda, who thanked him again for helping her mother. He told them both it was no problem at all, and that his grandmother raised him to be kind to others. Mandy asked Jason where his granny was and if she could chat with her to let her know how kind her grandson was. Jason looked at his feet and told them that his grandmother was in the hospital.

A Sad Tale and a Grand Idea

Mandy was saddened upon hearing about Jason’s grandmother, as was Lucinda. The boy told them that she was his last remaining family and that she needed treatment but they could not afford it. He was supposed to go fetch her the next day so she could live her last few months at home. Jason told them that she’d have a few years with treatment but unfortunately, fate had not been kind to them.

Lucinda felt the tears in her eyes, and then she realized she had the power to help Jason and his granny! She looked at Jason and asked him how he would feel about a Go-Fund-Me to help raise money for his granny. Jason was intrigued. “Do those things even work in real life?” he asked Lucinda. Mandy answered for her, telling him that they had excellent contacts to get the word around. They were pretty sure they could help. Jason invited them inside and Lucinda got to setting the Go-Fund-Me page up. There was no time to waste!

Success!

Lucinda had told Jason’s gran’s story as best she could, including photos and explaining how Jason had no family other than his gran. They were struggling so much financially as it was, treatment for her cancer was impossible without help from the public. Jason was still pretty sure nothing would come of their campaign and felt a bit silly asking strangers for money. They needed to raise at least $15,000. It seemed like an impossible plan. Lucinda and Mandy left and told Jason not to worry, they would be in touch.

On their way home, the mother and daughter duo made some calls and sent some emails in order to get the word out. Lucinda also posted on her very popular social media accounts. That night, they checked on the campaign and saw a steady but slow increase in donations. They were still positive that they would be able to make the target needed. The next morning, Lucinda woke up and switched her computer on. Checking on the campaign, her jaw dropped. Somehow, they had already made double the needed money! Mandy was thrilled as they watched the number climb even more. This meant that Jason would be able to do a lot more than just pay for his granny’s treatment.

Lucinda called Jason on his cell phone to tell him the good news. He was flabbergasted and started to cry. He realized he would not have to work 3 jobs for the foreseeable future and might actually be able to go back to college. His granny was going to be okay and he could afford to save her life! All because he had been kind to a stranger in the grocery store a few weeks ago. He could not believe his luck and that everything was going to be okay.
