Lisa Swayze feels her late husband’s presence all the time: ‘Love doesn’t stop’

Losing a loved one is never easy. When Patrick Swayze died, his widow, Lisa, was left grief-stricken. He had only been diagnosed with cancer two years prior, and it was a fast-growing disease that took over his pancreas. After his passing, Lisa could still sense his spirit around her every day. She said she never stopped loving Patrick.

Lovers for Life

Patrick and Lisa Swayze shared a love story that one would read about in books or fawn over in a film. They were married for 34 years, until Patrick’s death in 2009. Their first meeting was when they were still teenagers, which was when they fell in love with each other. They got married in 1975 and remained devoted to each other until the end of Patrick’s life.

Her husband ended up on a path toward stardom, but Lisa Swayze never backed down from her role as a loving and highly supportive wife. He always made sure to prioritize his family and marriage, and Lisa was his constant support throughout his career. Even when he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Lisa and Patrick did not create a family of their own, as they didn’t have children. Tragically, Lisa Swayze suffered one miscarriage. “Both of us loved kids and always intended to have kids. I did become pregnant but I had a miscarriage,” Lisa said in the documentary about her late husband, I Am Patrick Swayze. “Who knew that miscarriages were as painful as they are, emotionally painful? It was very heartbreaking.”

Throughout their marriage, Patrick and Lisa Swayze faced some challenges, including Patrick’s alcohol addiction. However, they remained committed to each other and their marriage, and their love never wavered. Patrick Swayze was a romantic person with his own ideals for how God would judge him upon entry to Heaven. He once said, “I don’t know what heaven will be like, but I know that when we die and it comes time for God to judge us, he will not ask, ‘How many good things have you done in your life?’ rather he will ask, ‘How much love did you put into what you did?’

Lisa Swayze Still Feels Patrick

In 2008, the world received a massive shock. The news revealed that Patrick Swayze had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. This is a particularly evasive and aggressive cancer, so it took over his body fairly quickly. Despite the diagnosis, Patrick remained in high spirits. He chose to be optimistic and determined. In the hopes of raising more awareness about this particular cancer, he would do public talks and campaigns. He quickly became an advocate for pancreatic cancer research funding. Lisa Swayze ended up taking over his cancer campaigning after he died.

In an interview with TODAY, Lisa said she can still feel her beloved Patrick Swayze’s presence on a daily basis. “His voice is in my head. He comments on what I’m doing. When I need a bolstering up or something’s going on, I can ask him in my head, and I hear exactly what he’s saying, which is generally, ‘Come on, girl, get real.’”

She went on to say that her marriage with Patrick is still active, even if he is not alive anymore. “Just because somebody’s gone doesn’t end your relationship with them. We spent 34 years together, and that’s always going to be a part of my life and who I am.”
