Celebrity marriages often face public scrutiny and many end in failure. However, amidst the endless stream of dramatic breakups, one couple has stood the test of time. In 2024, Michael J. Fox and his wife, Tracy Pollan, will celebrate 36 years of marriage. They’ve decided to share their secrets to a lasting relationship.
Michael J. Fox and Tracy Pollan
Michael J. Fox and Tracy Pollan did not come from similar backgrounds, despite key commonalities that drew them together. Tracy, hailing from a well-known Jewish family in New York, attended the Lee Strasberg Institute for her education. Conversely, Michael dropped out of high school and achieved his GED at the age of 30. Their bond was strengthened by their sense of humor and shared experience of being middle children. Fox told PEOPLE that they connected over “Big families, middle children. Sense of humor. Both our families had that.”
Meeting for the First Time
The couple’s initial meeting was in 1985 when Pollan played Fox’s love interest on the TV show, Family Ties. Although Pollan only stayed for one season, she and Fox reconnected in 1987 while filming Bright Lights, Big City. They went on their first date, and within a year, they were married.
A Tight-Knit Family
Pollan grew up in a close-knit family and infused those values into her own family. “It was us against the world,” she said, reflecting on the family unity she and Fox maintained. Their family includes four children: Esme, 16, twins Schuyler and Aquinnah, 23, and their eldest son, Sam, 29. The six of them share a close bond.
Pollan and Parkinson’s
In 1991, the couple faced a huge challenge when Michael was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, a condition that severely impairs motor skills. The diagnosis affected Michael deeply, leading him to struggle with drinking. During this difficult time, Pollan stood by him, providing unwavering support until he eventually became a dedicated activist for Parkinson’s research.
What Makes Their Marriage Successful?
PEOPLE asked the couple about the keys to their successful marriage. Pollan emphasized the importance of giving each other the benefit of the doubt. “He assumes I’m doing the best I can,” she said, highlighting the necessity of focusing on each other’s best qualities. Additionally, Pollan noted how Fox’s optimistic outlook helps her manage stress. “Michael doesn’t worry about the future. I’m completely the opposite,” she shared.
