Why Instant Noodles Can Be a Hazard to Your Kids

In a study conducted at the University of Chicago Medicine Burn Center highlighted a concerning trend. Nearly one-third of pediatric burn admissions between 2010 and 2020 were attributed to injuries caused by ramen noodles. Dr. Sebastian Vrouwe, senior author of the study, expressed their motivation for this investigation: “Our hope is to develop the groundwork for future burn prevention programming, as essentially all childhood burns are in some way preventable“.

The study revealed a worrying association between unsupervised children and these scald burns, with about 40% occurring when kids were alone. Additionally, children from areas with lower Childhood Opportunity Index scores faced a higher risk of suffering these burns.

The burn team identified common behavior patterns leading to scald incidents, such as spills while handling or eating noodles due to the narrow bases of ramen noodle cups.

Ramen Noodles Nutrition and Health Implications

Beyond the risks of burns, it’s essential to recognize the nutritional aspect of ramen noodles. While popularly consumed for their convenience, these noodles lack essential nutrients and are high in sodium and unhealthy fats.2 A single packet contains alarming levels of saturated fat, contributing to health concerns like high blood sugar, high blood pressure, heart disease, and diabetes.

Dr. Vrouwe emphasized the importance of supervision and simple preventive measures: “An adult should always remove noodles from the microwave and keep them out of children’s reach until sufficiently cooled”. Moreover, eating at a table instead of on a lap reduces the risk of spills and burns.
