Girl Scouts of the USA received a big surprise when Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’ ex-wife, MacKenzie Scott donated $84.5 million. 29 local councils have altogether been chosen by Scott with the national chapter correspondingly included.
“We are extremely grateful to MacKenzie Scott for her generous investment in girls. Her gift intentionally acknowledge the needs of girls and women whose causes have traditionally been underrepresented due to disparities in giving.” Mary Mitchell, co-CEO of GSACPC, stated in the release.
“With the challenges facing girls today, investing in their futures is critical. Her support will expand our local programming to help girls in our community reach their maximum potential.”
Wealthy and giving, what a way into one’s heart
As one of the wealthiest women in the world, Scott divorced Bezos in 2019. This is not the first of her very generous donations either. She has donated $1.7 billion and $4 billion to multiple causes in 2020.
The largest donation to date stands at $436 million, which Mackenzie gifted to Habitat for Humanity International and its affiliates. The funds are to be used to promote home ownership in minority communities, for minorities.
According to Forbes, MacKenzie has donated a massive $12.8 billion to over 1,200 organizations. With Girl Scouts being the largest organization in the world for girls, with 2.5 million members spread around the globe.

Girl Scouts helping the smaller communities
The grant will see the Girl Scouts being able to “create more equitable membership opportunities in communities that are under engaged.” Therefor “foster meaningful program innovation informed by the current interests and needs of girls to prepare them for leadership, including an expanded focus on career readiness and mental wellness,” the release said.
“This is a great accelerator for our ongoing efforts to help girls cultivate the skills and connections needed to lead in their own communities and globally,” Girl Scouts CEO Sofia Chang said in a release.
