Mother is livid after 11-year-old daughter comes home from sleepover with multiple piercings

More and more people are turning to the Internet for advice. Not only can we use Google search to answer every question. We also have access to social platforms through which, among other features, people can ask others for advice or perspective. One angry mom did just that when her daughter came home with piercings, and she hadn’t been consulted.

The anonymous Reddit post is believed to have originated somewhere in the UK from a concerned mom. She shared that she sent her 11-year-old daughter to a friend’s house. Then after explaining the situation, wants to know if she should ban the daughter from seeing those friends again.

Piercings Cause a Stir

The 11-year-old often went to hang out with her 13-year-old friend, who lived nearby. On this particular day, the 13-year-old had two friends over, a 14- and a 15-year-old. The anonymous mom was feeling nervous about letting her daughter hang out with all 3 girls but reluctantly agreed.

Apparently, her concerns were valid because when her daughter came home, she had seven more piercings than when she’d left. Now concerned about the situation, the anonymous mom posted on Reddit saying, “I have many concerns around hygiene, removing the piercings but mainly how easily my daughter was influenced by the older girls to do something so stupid. She is also too young to make what I consider a permanent decision and she may also regret the piercings later.” Wanting to know if she’s being unreasonable, she asked Reddit if she should “ban” her daughter from hanging out with those girls again.

Redditors Offer Support

Unsurprisingly, Reddit users were all too excited to offer encouragement and perspectives. “I would be taking all of them out and talking to her about standing up for herself and peer pressure.” Said one commenter.

Meanwhile, another said, “Poor girl. That must have really hurt. I really don’t like those other girls. They mistreated your daughter. Call those parents and she’s not allowed to be around them, or at least not unsupervised. Get the piercings taken out and a trip to the pediatrician.”

Many other users responded in support of the outraged mom, reassuring her that her feelings are totally valid.

Piercings Resulting from Peer Pressure

Nearly every person on the planet has spent some time in the mirror, criticizing themselves. Some unhappy with the blemishes on their faces, some wish for curly hair when theirs is straight. Others rigorously workout and diet to eliminate fat. However, what sets this generation apart from other generations is access to media platforms. Technology has done a lot of good, but with it has also come the ability to create things that are otherwise completely unrealistic. In this case, a young girl was subjected, according to her mom, to peer pressure and came home with new piercings that she hadn’t previously expressed interest in.

Sadly, this isn’t the only recent case of a young child making an appearance-altering decision. Moreover, it’s not the first case of changes made resulting from peer pressure. Although it’s an infuriating situation, the piercings are relatively mild compared to the plastic surgery trend that seems to be becoming more desirable to younger generations. Several plastic surgeons have attributed these rising rates to peer pressure, social media filters, and the always trending desire to fix one’s “flaws”.

Piercings Without Permission

Additionally, whether the parent in charge was giving the girls minimal supervision or also took part in the piercings, this mom was robbed of the opportunity to talk things through with her daughter. Many would argue, parents should always be given the opportunity to make decisions regarding their children, particularly when those children aren’t yet legal adults.

The anonymous mom was concerned about the influence the older girls would have on her daughter, maybe for good reason. It seems her intuition may not have been too far off, and she’ll likely act on that feeling in the future. However, for now, she’s in an awkward position that any parent would rightfully hate. Thankfully the Reddit community was ready to step in and offer some other perspective. Thereby validating her reaction to her daughter’s new piercings.
