Val Kilmer, Iconic ‘Batman Forever’ and ‘The Doors’ Actor, Passes Away at 65

Val Kilmer, the actor famous for his roles in Top Gun, Batman Forever, and Tombstone, has passed away at the age of 65. His daughter, Mercedes Kilmer, confirmed his death, which occurred on Tuesday in Los Angeles, according to The Associated Press.

Kilmer had been fighting throat cancer since 2015, which led to him having a tracheotomy. This made it difficult for him to speak. In an interview with Good Morning America in 2020, Kilmer explained how he adjusted to his new way of communicating, saying, “It’s just like any other language or dialect… You have to figure out a way to communicate that’s no different than any other acting challenge, but it’s just a very unique set of circumstances.”

Before becoming a Hollywood star, Kilmer trained at the Juilliard School and began his career in theater, performing in off-Broadway productions. He rose to fame in the early ’80s with roles in the comedy Top Secret! and the sci-fi film Real Genius.

His big break came in 1986 when he starred as Tom “Iceman” Kazansky in Top Gun, which was a massive box office hit, earning $344 million. This success helped Kilmer land many other important roles in the late ’80s and early ’90s. He portrayed the charming swordsman Madmartigan in Willow, the iconic musician Jim Morrison in The Doors, and the legendary gunslinger Doc Holliday in Tombstone alongside Kurt Russell.

Kilmer’s portrayal of Batman in Batman Forever (1995) marked another high point in his career, though he chose not to return for the next film in the series. In the 2021 documentary Val, he shared his feelings about wearing the Batsuit, stating, “Whatever boyhood excitement I had was crushed by the reality of the Batsuit… Yes, every boy wants to be Batman. They actually want to be him … not necessarily play him in a movie.”

Remembering an Accomplished Career

Val Kilmer is a renowned actor whose career spanned over four decades, with notable performances in both film and theater. He began his career in the early 1980s with a focus on theater, studying at the prestigious Juilliard School before transitioning to film. Kilmer’s early career was marked by his roles in comedies like Top Secret! and Real Genius, where his unique blend of humor and charm gained him widespread recognition.

Beyond his famous roles in Top Gun and Batman Forever, Kilmer was also known for his commitment to playing complex characters. Kilmer’s versatility allowed him to play a wide range of characters, from historical figures to fictional heroes. He earned critical acclaim for his portrayal of Mark Twain in The Adventures of Mark Twain (1985) and his role as the legendary outlaw Doc Holliday in Tombstone (1993).
