‘I’m Dying…’ — Steve Irwin’s Cameraman Opens Up About the Crocodile Hunter’s Last Words

Known globally as the “Crocodile Hunter,” a title inspired by his television series, Irwin spent four decades capturing the imaginations of millions with his daring encounters and passionate conservation work. Steve Irwin’s last words have been recounted by his cameraman in a heartfelt interview.

Steve Irwin’s affinity for wildlife began at an early age. At just six years old, Irwin arrived late to school, having stopped to rescue a lizard from the road. This early demonstration of his love for animals foreshadowed a life spent fearlessly working with crocodiles, snakes, and other creatures.

Irwin’s life came to a heartbreaking end on September 4, 2006. While filming a series called Ocean’s Deadliest, Irwin encountered a stingray that would prove fatal. The location was Queensland, Australia, where Irwin and his cameraman, Justin Lyons, were about eight days into their shoot. Lyons, the sole witness to Irwin’s final moments, later recounted the tragic event in a candid interview with Australia’s Studio 10.

The Stingray Attack

Despite their fearsome reputation, stingrays are generally docile creatures that attack only when threatened. According to WebMD, a stingray’s venomous barb can cause life-threatening injuries, but they typically reserve such defenses for larger predators like sharks. On that ill-fated day, however, a massive 8-foot-wide stingray mistook Irwin’s shadow for a tiger shark and reacted violently. Lyons recalled, “It started stabbing wildly with its tail, hundreds of strikes within a few seconds.”

The Sudden Realization of Danger

At first, the attack’s severity was unclear. Lyons, busy filming what he thought would be a spectacular shot, noticed something was wrong only after the stingray swam away. A plume of blood surrounded Irwin in the water. “I panned with the camera as the stingray swam away. I didn’t even know it had caused any damage,” Lyons shared. It wasn’t until he refocused on Irwin that the gravity of the situation became evident. “Steve was standing in a huge pool of blood,” Lyons added.

A Fatal Wound

The stingray’s barb had pierced Irwin’s chest, creating a two-inch-wide gash that punctured both his lungs and heart. Lyons immediately feared that the blood in the water might attract sharks. Despite the crew’s efforts to save him, Irwin’s condition rapidly deteriorated. Lyons described the harrowing scene: “He was in extraordinary pain… The damage to his heart was massive.” As the team rushed to provide CPR and transport Irwin back to their inflatable boat, it became clear that his injuries were severe.

In his last moments, Irwin remained composed. While his crew worked tirelessly to save him, Lyons tried to reassure him by urging him to think of his children. Yet, Irwin’s calm acknowledgment of his condition spoke volumes. “He looked up at me and calmly said, ‘I’m dying,’” Lyons recalled. These poignant words were the last he ever spoke. Despite the arrival of paramedics, Irwin was pronounced dead at the scene.

The footage of the tragic event was handed over to Queensland Police for investigation. According to Joe.co.uk, all copies of the tape were destroyed, except for one given to Irwin’s widow, Terri. Terri has chosen not to watch the footage and has prevented their children, Robert and Bindi, from viewing it as well. In her own words, she expressed a desire to keep the film private, ensuring that it remains out of public circulation.
