Prince Harry Resigns from Sentebale Amid Governance Dispute

In a shocking turn of events, Prince Harry has reportedly resigned from his role in Sentebale, the African charity he co-founded nearly two decades ago. The decision, driven by “infighting” within the organization, has left the Duke of Sussex “heartbroken” and “in shock.” This article delves into the details of the governance dispute that has disrupted one of Harry’s most cherished initiatives.

Prince Harry, alongside co-founder Prince Seeiso of Lesotho, stepped down as patron of Sentebale on Tuesday. This decision follows a contentious dispute involving the charity’s chair, Dr. Sophie Chandauka, a lawyer appointed in 2023. Reports suggest that trustees within the organization had urged Chandauka to step down, citing concerns over her leadership. The ensuing discord led to her filing a legal case to retain her position. Further deepening the rift within the charity.

Sentebale, which means “Forget Me Not,” was founded by Prince Harry in 2006 in honor of his mother, Princess Diana. The charity’s mission is to support vulnerable children and young people in Lesotho and Botswana, particularly those affected by HIV and AIDS. Having established the charity during his gap year visit to southern Africa, Prince Harry has long viewed Sentebale as a deeply personal endeavor. The current turmoil is, therefore, a particularly painful setback for him.

In a joint statement seen by The Times, Prince Harry and Prince Seeiso expressed their dismay at recent developments within Sentebale. “These trustees acted in the best interest of the charity in asking the chair to step down, while keeping the wellbeing of staff in mind,” they said. The statement also highlighted the emotional toll of the situation, stating: “What’s transpired is unthinkable. We are in shock that we have to do this. But we have a continued responsibility to Sentebale’s beneficiaries, so we will be sharing all of our concerns with the Charity Commission as to how this came about.”

Several former trustees, including Timothy Boucher, Mark Dyer, Audrey Kgosidintsi, Kelello Lerotholi, and Damian West, issued a joint statement explaining their unanimous decision to resign. They stated: “Today’s decision is nothing short of devastating for all of us, but we see no other path forward as the result of our loss in trust and confidence in the chair of the board.” Their departure underscores the gravity of the governance challenges facing Sentebale.

In response to the controversy, Dr. Sophie Chandauka defended her actions and leadership. “Everything I do at Sentebale is in pursuit of the integrity of the organization, its mission, and the young people we serve,” she stated. Chandauka also raised serious allegations against some within the organization, claiming instances of poor governance, abuse of power, and bullying. “There are people in this world who behave as though they are above the law and mistreat people. And then play the victim card,” she remarked. Further urging the public to consider why legal action was necessary to address these issues.

Prince Harry’s patronage of Sentebale has been one of the few royal affiliations he retained following his 2021 departure from official royal duties. The charity’s significance, both as a tribute to Princess Diana and as a reflection of Harry’s personal values, makes this resignation particularly poignant. As the governance dispute unfolds, the future of Sentebale remains uncertain. Though its mission to support vulnerable communities in Africa continues to resonate.

A Heartbreaking Chapter in his Philanthropic Journey

Prince Harry’s resignation from Sentebale marks a heartbreaking chapter in his philanthropic journey. The governance dispute has not only disrupted the operations of a vital organization but also cast a shadow over a charity deeply tied to his personal and family legacy. As the situation develops, all eyes will be on Sentebale’s leadership and the Charity Commission’s response to ensure the organization’s mission is preserved.
