Nearly everyone has experienced some form of grief and, more than likely, has come up with their own preferred method of coping. While some are unhealthy, if not downright destructive, others are a heartwarming reminder to the world that love flows abundantly. For example, back in the 1970’s a farmer grieving the loss of his wife chose to plant a breathtaking guitar-shaped forest and, today, it’s still visible by all who fly overhead.
A Creative Dream Never Realized
In the 1970s, Pedro Martin Ureta and his wife, Graciela, flew over a farm located in the plains, or Pampas, of Argentina. Something peculiar caught Graciela’s attention as she noted the farm was shaped like a milk pail. Inspired by the creative design and her passion for music, she dreamt up a unique design for their fields. Sadly, she would never realize her dream of a guitar-shaped forest. In 1977, while pregnant and only 25 years old, she suffered from a brain aneurysm and passed away. Stricken with grief, Pedro and his four children set out on a mission to make his beloved wife’s dream a reality.

A Guitar-Shaped Forest Legacy
In 1979, they began the project and planted over 7,000 trees, stretching nearly 2/3 of a mile. The gesture is heartwarming, and the guitar-shaped forest has been specifically designed with differing trees so that everything appears clear from the sky. The guitar-shaped forest outline comprises of cypress trees, while the strings are made with blue eucalyptus trees.
Pedro and his children found an incredibly profound way to honor their beloved wife and mother and to share that with the world. The guitar-shaped forest has sparked joy for all who fly over by plane, and even from space. In fact, it’s become so popular among NASA, they’ve “documented their love”, using ASTER on the Terra satellite.

A Heart-Touching Tribute Reaches the World
Thanks to technology such as Google Earth, a wide range of images can be seen online. Most of them may be mundane and practical, but some of them will touch your heart. Over the years, people have even caught glimpses of their deceased parents or loved ones on Google Maps– an odd but touching discovery that cements their memory.
While the the guitar-shaped forest has become a favorite attraction for those overhead, Pedro himself has never seen his creation from a bird’s eye view, as he’s afraid of flying. However, he has gotten to enjoy the NASA Satellite images as well as those from Google Earth. While Pedro found love again, the tribute he and his family paid to his late wife has undoubtedly touched people’s hearts worldwide. Thousands of comments can be found on Google responding to the images. Proving that all over the world, people are excited and touched. Moved by an act of creativity and unyielding love, it will likely be for generations.
Dealing with the loss of a loved one is never easy to do. However, there are things can help us move through and with the pain. Although not many people have the resources to create something as extravagant as a beautiful guitar-shaped forest, creating something is often a useful, and healthy, method for coping with the challenges of life, love, and death.
