‘My Family of 8 has to Live in Different Houses — the Council Split Us Up.’

Rebecca and her husband Yassin Amrani have been separated since from one another since June. The couple has 6 kids, and they’ve been split up between mom and dad. The family was forced to move from their home when her landlord came back from Egypt. After they vacated the property their only option was to split up and stay in temporary housing accommodations.

A Distressed Mother Seeks Help

Rebecca said, “My support worker knows about this and has raised it, but no-one at the council is taking any notice.” The 33-year-old mom is currently living with 4 of the 6 children in a 1-bedroom home. The family also shares a kitchen with another family. The children staying with Rebecca are ages, 9, 4, and 1-year-old twin boys.

Sharing the Sentiment

Yassin, aged 38 is living with their oldest daughters, aged 15 and 12. They are also in a 1-bedroom house, across the street from Rebecca, shared with four other families. Rebecca faces a number of hardships with their current living situation. This includes the knowledge that her girls sometimes have to sleep alone. The reason for this is that their father often works nights.

Another hardship for Rebecca in these living conditions is that her son is thought to have autism. He struggles with the cramped conditions and noisiness. She expresses that her son is miserable. She states, “My son said, ‘I’m not going to that prison’ It’s not nice my child is expressing it like this.” Their whole family seems to be feeling the negative impacts of their current living situation.

Responding to Her Pleas

Rebecca says that she has sent more than 50 emails to city council asking for placement elsewhere. She is feeling frustrated and ignored as no one has gotten back to her. A council spokesperson has commented in response to the housing crisis and Rebecca’s family’s circumstances. The spokesperson explains, “We have offered this family alternative accommodation, including rooms within the same building they are in currently, as well as rooms in a purpose-built homeless center, however they have refused both offers.

Further explaining, “We will continue to look for more suitable accommodation for this household and will ensure that they are contacted by one of our outreach team who can provide support and advice regarding housing options including renting in the private sector. However, Birmingham has a high demand on our waiting list. All offers of permanent accommodation will be made in line with our housing allocation policy.”

Worldwide Housing Crisis

Post-pandemic issues seem to be continually occurring. According to the spokesperson the country is experiencing a nationwide housing crisis. Unfortunately, theirs isn’t the only country facing this problem. Subsequently, Rebecca and her family are not the only people who are suffering from the effects of the rising cost of living and lack of available(affordable) housing. Many people are living in poverty and struggling to cultivate suitable living conditions for their families. As a result, the need for a solution is more pressing than ever before.

The US is one of the countries to see a rapid increase in the cost of living. However, this is a more pressing matter affecting the whole globe. The U.N. estimates there are more than 100 million people worldwide who are homeless or living on the streets. Additionally, they report there are currently 1.6 billion people living in substandard housing. Because prices are the highest and supply is less than the demand, California is where, in the US, the crisis is at its worst.

A Blogger Weighing In

Unfortunately, the long-term negative impacts will affect more than just the economy. Andreas, a graduate with a Master’s in Economics, has made it his mission to educate people on the importance of environmental friendliness. He writes a blog on eco-conscious living and explains that the crisis may also have huge impacts on the state of our ecosystem. Some of these impacts include higher rates of pollution, unhygienic conditions, and increasing health problems.

This 33-year-old mom of 6 is desperate for a solution has done all she can to get in touch with someone who can help her family through this difficult time. She said of the situation, “What do I do? I’m being ignored. I’m asking to be put in something which is self-contained. I hope we can move as soon as possible.”
