Followers of Christianity believe that Jesus is the son of God. Meanwhile, others believe he was a prophet or something similar. Either way, he made some powerful statements and they’re still widely discussed thousands of years later. Here are 12 examples of his most thought provoking words.
1. “Jesus Answered”
John 14:6 explains that Jesus said to his followers: “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” While many teachings found in the Bible can be left up to interpretation, this one seems pretty concise. For example, the Bible teaches that those who seek a path to Heaven must first accept Jesus into their hearts. As such, it makes sense that Jesus would make a statement expressing that only through Him can people find their way to God. Alternately, those who aren’t religious are subtly reminded that finding a noble purpose will ensure a happy and fulfilling life
2. A Good Lesson for All
“Do to others as you would have them do to you.” – Luke 6:31
These powerful words remind people to treat others with the same kindness, consideration, and respect they hope to be treated with. It doesn’t matter whether or not you’re religious, following this advice will ultimately help create a more compassionate and kinder world.
3. Jesus Helps Those Who Help Themselves
The verse Luke 11: 9 is a great example of how people get ahead when they help themselves. Some offer credit to God or Jesus but even He explains that you’ll have to meet Him part way to achieve your goals and desires. However, someone without religious ties may simply take note of the importance of teamwork and community, of working with others and leaning on them in difficult times.
“So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.”
4. An Additional Reminder
John 15:5 is another reminder of how everyone needs help sometimes and how working with others can create a foundation of support for everyone involved.
“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”
5. Jesus Spoke of Peace
John 14:27 says, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.” For many, the verse offers a warm and loving reminder that internal peace can be achieved, and is an enjoyable way to live life. Alternately, managing mental health struggles, trying various therapeutic approaches, and exploring other mindfulness practices can help create feelings of inner peace and tranquility.
6. Jesus Said to Love Others
There are many examples of how Jesus showed love and compassion to people who weren’t considered well-off, popular, or virtuous. However, it seems the main point of his teachings is simply not to judge others. Rather try to love and understand them and their struggles. For example, Matthew 7:1 teaches: “Do not judge or you too will be judged,” according to Bible Study Tools.
7. John 2:19
“Destroy this temple, & in three days I will raise it up.”
Purportedly, Jesus was referring to the future, and his resurrection, and using His body as a “metaphor” for the temple. Although there isn’t much to take away from this verse if you don’t have religious beliefs, it’s a powerful statement that speaks to the might and magnitude of how faith and acceptance can overcome nearly every hurdle.
8. Luke 17:21
“The kingdom of God is in the midst of you.” Most people consider heaven to be a geographical location somewhere in the sky and above the clouds. However, Jesus explained to his followers that Heaven was already present. Rather, it’s a “spiritual reality” and is present wherever God has been welcomed.
9. “Paradise” Through Jesus
Luke 23:43 says: “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise.” Many believe that Jesus sacrificed His life so that everyone could receive forgiveness and atonement for their transgressions. As such, this moment is incredibly powerful among religious people because Jesus was speaking to a man, and a criminal, hung next to Him, offering absolution in their final moments. This verse is a reminder to all, anyone can correct their wrongs, even moments before death, and find peace, salvation, and a way into “paradise”. However, you never know when your last breath will be. So, make amends with your loved ones and treat others with kindness as soon as possible, whenever possible to avoid any unspoken and unresolved feelings of guilt, shame, or resentment.
10. John 10 10-11
These 2 verses go together in explaining that through Jesus, corruption and greed is laid to rest. Rather, by accepting Him and asking for forgiveness or the strength to walk a more noble path you can reap the benefits of His sacrifice.
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the fullest.” Verse 11 continues: “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”
11. Additionally, Seeking Jesus will Help
Matthew 6, verse 33 says: “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” Whether or not you focus on seeking Jesus, by striving for “righteousness” you’ll find yourself unexpectedly rewarded, in some cases, beyond your wildest dreams.
12. Matthew 6:19-21
19-21 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” These verses express the importance of what’s in people’s hearts, rather than focusing on material things. While many of these words have been debated, interpreted, and translated countless times, some lessons will never cease to be relevant including the importance of treating others with kindness and compassion.
