‘Hypergamy’ a New Dating Trend is Rising in Popularity as 40% of Americans Take Part

A new dating trend has taken over the U.S., with 40% of Americans partaking or agreeing that there is some appeal. Hypergamy is a trend similar to that of being a gold digger. However, one crucial difference is that the former dating trend relates to status and power rather than financial gain.

The concept of hypergamy is simple. Basically, a person chooses to date someone from a higher socioeconomic background, also called “dating up.” This new trend is on the rise, according to a recent study. The poll surveyed 2,000 Americans and results reflected that several participants admitted to an interest in a partner with “a higher socioeconomic status.” Actually, 47% of participants responded positively to the idea of hypergamy dating.

Emma Hathorn is a relationship expert from a luxury dating site called Seeking.com. She is familiar with the concept of hypergamy and commented on the benefits of dating in this manner. “When people are looking for meaningful connections and relationships, they’re looking for others that can match their intellect and have ambitions in life. Showcasing those ambitions and treating dates to a taste of luxury sets the bar for the relationship, it is time to say goodbye to ordinary dating.” She explained. “People want to find themselves elevated — both in the conversation itself and by being treated to something tailored to them, exclusively. A great relationship is one where both people are constantly learning and growing together.” She added.

For at least one partner, the benefits of hypergamy dating are obvious. People have attributed hypergamy relationships to the possibility of elevating their lives. Some reasons hypergamy dating appeals to Americans include:

  • More personal growth
  • Cultural or Social enrichment
  • Opportunity for discoveries
  • Enhance one’s life
  • A stronger source of support

Although hypergamy has taken off recently, it’s a dating concept that is believed to have been prevalent for centuries. Consequently, some scientists attribute the trend to biology. “Hundreds of thousands of years ago, you wanted a man who had more resources, land, or his own watering hole,” explained Dr. Helen Fisher, a chief science advisor at Match. “A man with resources is better suited to help you raise your children.”

Possible Adversity Associated with Hypergamy

Some may argue that a downside to hypergamy relates to women’s rights. After all, there’s a common stereotype that women have fewer freedoms and rights when they rely on their partner for social or financial gain. In some cases, this may be true. However, the basis for any healthy relationship is mutual respect and understanding. Therefore, any relationship, including one intended to elevate status or finances, must have those elements and open communication to be healthy and thrive.

Role Reversal

Furthermore, a basis for this stereotype is that only women “date up.” However, that isn’t always the case, particularly as gender roles shift. For example, more women have high-powered careers than they did several years ago. While gender equity still needs some progress, women have soared to new heights, qualifying them for higher socioeconomic standing.

Other Desirable Traits

Hypergamy dating appeals to several Americans, but others have more pressing priorities. For example, 42% of Americans said they’d like a partner who can cook. Meanwhile, 24% were concerned with whether their partner has a nice home. Lastly, around 20% of Americans value a partner with “cultured” taste in music or a good sense of fashion.

Seemingly, hypergamy is increasing in popularity as people explore non-traditional relationships or partnerships, including exploring a concept possibly rooted in our biological makeup.
