Amy Schumer Opens Up About Health Struggles After Ozempic Use Left Her ‘Bedridden’

Actor and comedian Amy Schumer has never shied away from discussing her health journey. Over the past few months, she has been increasingly vocal about her experiences with weight-loss medications and the impact they have had on her well-being. During a recent appearance on The Howard Stern Show, Amy Schumer’s Ozempic struggles were revealed for all to see. This is a diabetes drug that has gained popularity among celebrities for its weight-loss effects.

However, her experience was far from positive. “I tried Ozempic almost three years ago and I was like, bedridden,” Schumer shared during the interview. “I was like, vomiting — and then you have no energy. But other people take it and they’re all good.”

Despite her initial adverse reaction, Schumer did not completely abandon the idea of using weight-loss medications. In a recent Instagram video, she disclosed that she had tried Wegovy, another semaglutide-based drug, years ago but had an equally unpleasant experience. “Three years ago, I tried Wegovy,” she explained. “I was puking, I couldn’t handle it. I don’t know if they’ve changed the formula, whatever.”

However, Schumer also shared that her experience with Mounjaro, a medication containing tirzepatide, has been significantly better. After seeking an online health consultation through the midlife health clinic Midi Health, she found that Mounjaro, combined with hormone therapy for perimenopause, had improved her overall well-being. “So that’s been great and Mounjaro’s been great,” she said.

Ozempic, along with similar medications like Wegovy and Mounjaro, was initially developed for the treatment of Type 2 diabetes. These drugs function by mimicking hormones that regulate appetite, thereby reducing food intake and aiding weight loss.

Ozempic and Wegovy contain semaglutide, while Mounjaro uses tirzepatide, which has been shown to have significant weight-loss benefits. Given their effectiveness, these drugs have gained traction as weight-loss solutions, though their availability varies across different healthcare systems.

In the UK, Wegovy is currently available through limited specialist services, while Mounjaro was approved for use by NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) in December 2024 and is expected to be rolled out in a similar manner.

While these medications have become increasingly popular, Schumer was quick to acknowledge the challenges associated with accessing them, particularly in the United States. She highlighted the financial barriers that many face in obtaining these treatments.

“It’s not covered by insurance unless you have diabetes or severe obesity, which most of the internet thinks I have. But I’m having a really good experience with it,” Schumer remarked. “I wanted to keep it real with you about that.”

Schumer has long been subjected to public scrutiny over her appearance, and she recently revealed that online trolling actually led to an important medical diagnosis. During an interview on Call Her Daddy, she admitted that relentless criticism about her looks ultimately prompted her to seek medical attention, resulting in a diagnosis of Cushing’s Syndrome.

“I wouldn’t have known [about Cushing’s Syndrome] if the internet hadn’t come for me so hard,” she said. Adding a touch of humor to the situation. “Doctors were chiming in in the comments and they were, like, ‘No, no, something’s really up. Your face looks so crazy.'”
