For some women, making a trip to the mechanic can be an overwhelming experience. In a male-driven industry, the majority of women feel anxious about the idea of entering a repair shop with fears of being overcharged or belittled in the process.
These fears were real for Zoe Cog, 25, from Manchester. Zoe started working in the industry as a receptionist and soon began training as a mechanic. It was then that she started to notice a need for more females in the industry, and decided to eventually open a female-owned garage called Autocog, in hopes of creating a safe space for women and non-binary clients.
“I’ve been the girl on the other end, worried about walking into places like garages and feeling anxious, and although it’s never easy, I like to think I’m an approachable, friendly female who has created a place where you can walk in and feel at ease, regardless of your gender,” she said.
Breaking Barriers in a Male-Dominated Industry

Entering the auto repair industry as a woman comes with its share of obstacles, but Zoe refused to let them stand in her way. Determined to challenge outdated norms, she carved out a space where skill and dedication matter more than gender. ‘I like to think I offer something different in the automotive sector, which gives peace of mind to women who get anxious walking into a male-dominated environment.” says Zoe in an interview with Metro.
Why Women Feel Uncomfortable in Traditional Garages

Often women have unpleasant experiences where they are spoken down to, as if they don’t understand cars or repairs. They may feel patronized or as if they are being treated unfairly, making the experience frustrating and unwelcoming. This can lead to a lack of transparency, where some mechanics may take advantage by recommending unnecessary services or overcharging, leading to distrust.
Creating a Welcoming Space for Everyone

Zoe’s hopes when opening Autocog were to help ease the concerns women experience in the industry, where they frequently worry about being discriminated against. “I get pleasure out of taking the pressure off the girls and can give as good of a service as any male-owned garage, but also build trust with the people I’m working with,” she said.

Before opening Autocog, Zoe worked as a head technician at a Lamborghini and was a Ferrari specialist. ‘They were some of the best years of my life with some amazing people,’ she said, ‘But I just knew I had to create an environment that reflected what I’ve become – a woman making waves in a male-dominated industry.’
Changing Perceptions, One Repair at a Time

Since opening the doors at Autocog, the response has exceeded every expectation Zoe had, “Honestly, the response to my garage has been phenomenal and beyond anything I’d ever expected. It’s been an incredible rollercoaster. I’ve had so much support and positive feedback from not just women but also some incredible words from men,” she explains.
Overcoming Challenges

Many women in the automotive industry face skepticism and doubt about their abilities simply because of their gender. They overcome this by proving their expertise through certifications, hands-on experience, and consistent high-quality work. Zoe went on to explain that some of the feedback reinforced the necessity of a female-owned repair shop. “Some of the comments have proved why such a place was needed for us women — that’s for sure. I’ve had people question my ability to do the job as a woman, but I don’t let it get to me,” she said.
Inspiring the Next Generation of Female Mechanics

By stepping into the spotlight, Zoe is proving that women have a rightful place in the auto industry. Her success not only challenges stereotypes but also encourages young girls to see automotive repair as a viable and rewarding career. Through mentorship, workshops, and outreach programs, she is creating opportunities for the next generation of female mechanics to gain confidence and hands-on experience.
The Future of Inclusive Auto Repair Services

Zoe Cog’s journey from receptionist to mechanic and business owner highlights resilience, determination, and the power of representation. By creating Autocog, she has not only built a successful business but also created a space where women and non-binary individuals can feel safe and respected in an industry that has long been unwelcoming. Her efforts are breaking down barriers, inspiring future generations, and proving that change is possible when passion meets purpose. With continued support and advocacy, the auto repair industry can become a more inclusive and welcoming space for everyone.
