At Age Three, I Could Sense Jessie’s Evil – But Her Final Act Was Beyond Anything I Expected

At the tender age of three, I began to sense an unsettling presence in my cousin Jessie Moore. Little did I know that her final act would surpass even my darkest expectations. Let’s delve deeper into the tragedy surrounding the details of greyhound trainer Karen Leek’s murder at hands of pregnant niece revealed during Supreme Court plea hearing.

Growing up, Jessie exhibited behaviors that set her apart from other children. Her unpredictable mood swings and frequent dishonesty created an atmosphere of unease within our family. As we matured, these traits became more pronounced, leading to strained relationships and mounting concerns.

Our great-aunt, Karen Leek, a respected figure in the greyhound racing community, extended her home and heart to Jessie. Despite Jessie’s tumultuous lifestyle, which included drug use and associations with abusive partners, Aunt Karen provided stability and care, especially for Jessie’s young daughter. This generosity, however, was met with increasing tension, as Aunt Karen grew weary of Jessie’s erratic behavior and neglectful parenting.

The Breaking Point

On May 25, 2020, the simmering tensions reached a tragic climax. Jessie, eight months pregnant at the time, armed herself with a hammer and attacked Aunt Karen as she sat in her armchair watching television. The assault was brutal; Jessie struck her at least 12 times before placing a plastic bag over her head. This horrific act occurred just meters away from her five-year-old daughter, who was in another room.

In the immediate aftermath, Jessie fled the scene with her daughter, disposing of evidence along the way. She made stops to purchase cigarettes and fast food, displaying a chilling calmness. The following day, she returned to the crime scene, feigning shock upon “discovering” Aunt Karen’s body and calling emergency services. When questioned by police, Jessie denied any involvement, attempting to weave a false narrative to conceal her guilt.

The investigation swiftly uncovered inconsistencies in Jessie’s account. A diary detailing her animosity towards Aunt Karen was found, and DNA evidence linked her directly to the crime. The murder weapon, concealed in her home, was discovered by her boyfriend, leading to her arrest on June 4, 2020. Remarkably, Jessie gave birth to her second child the day after her arrest, with the infant being removed from her care shortly thereafter.

Trial and Sentencing

In court, Jessie pleaded guilty to the murder of Aunt Karen. The prosecution highlighted the severity and brutality of the crime, emphasizing the breach of trust and the vulnerability of the victim. The defense pointed to Jessie’s troubled upbringing, mental health issues, and abusive relationships as contributing factors. Despite these considerations, the court sentenced Jessie to 18 years in prison, with a minimum non-parole period of 13 years.

The murder of Aunt Karen by Jessie sent shockwaves through our family and the broader community. Aunt Karen was remembered as a kind, loving, and generous individual who had provided unwavering support to Jessie and her children. Her tragic death serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of untreated mental health issues and the complexities inherent in familial relationships.

In retrospect, the signs of Jessie’s inner turmoil were evident from a young age. However, none could have foreseen the extent to which her struggles would culminate in such a devastating act. This tragedy underscores the importance of early intervention and support for individuals exhibiting concerning behaviors, aiming to prevent future calamities and protect the well-being of all family members.
