Passenger Severely Injured in Waterslide Accident on World’s Largest Cruise Ship

A serious accident occurred on August 7, 2025, aboard the Icon of the Seas, currently the largest cruise ship in the world. An adult male passenger was injured after a panel of acrylic glass shattered while he was riding the Frightening Bolt waterslide. The ship’s medical team treated him immediately, and he is now in stable condition.

The accident took place on the 46-foot-tall Frightening Bolt waterslide. This slide is known for its trapdoor launch and full 360-degree enclosed loop. As the passenger traveled through the slide, an acrylic glass section broke apart. This created a jagged hole and allowing water to gush out onto Deck 15. Video footage taken by other guests shows passengers shouting for the ride to be stopped to prevent further injuries.

Crew members quickly halted the slide’s operation and dispatched the ship’s medical staff. Royal Caribbean confirmed that the injured passenger received treatment on board for skin lacerations affecting areas from his legs to his hands. Fortunately, there were no additional injuries since the area directly below the damaged slide section was empty at the time.

The Waterslide’s Structure on The World’s Largest Cruise Ship

The Frightening Bolt is constructed from acrylic glass tubing designed to withstand high water pressure and fast-moving riders. The break appears to have occurred at a stress point in the tube. Images shared online show an irregular, sharp-edged hole in the structure. The ship’s engineering team is investigating whether the failure was related to design flaws, maintenance issues, or unusual stress during operation.

Passengers described the scene as chaotic and frightening. Some stated that they were hesitant to use other slides after the incident. Others expressed relief that no one fell through the broken section. Many noted that the crew acted quickly, but some felt more information should have been shared with passengers about what had happened.

Other Recent Safety Concerns & Ship and Waterpark Details

The Icon of the Seas has faced several troubling incidents in recent months. In July, a passenger reportedly fell from an infinity pool area after trying to retrieve sunglasses but escaped serious injury. In a separate event, a crew member was involved in a violent altercation before going overboard and was later found deceased. These events have led to heightened concerns about safety measures on board.

Launched in 2024, the Icon of the Seas can accommodate up to 7,600 guests and 2,350 crew members. The ship features over 2,800 cabins across 20 decks and offers more than 40 dining and entertainment venues. Its waterpark, called Category 6, is the largest at sea and includes six record-breaking slides. The Frightening Bolt is marketed as the tallest waterslide on any cruise ship, designed to deliver a high-adrenaline experience.

Closure and Investigation – The Importance of Safety Standards

Following the accident, Royal Caribbean closed the Frightening Bolt for the rest of the voyage and restricted access to the surrounding deck area. The investigation will determine the cause of the failure and whether additional safety modifications are needed. Other slides and attractions remain open, though crew members have been observed conducting more frequent safety checks.

While waterslide accidents on cruise ships are rare, this incident emphasizes the need for rigorous inspections and strict maintenance protocols. Millions of passengers use cruise ship attractions each year without harm, but the potential for injury means safety measures must be consistently prioritized. The fact that the injured guest is stable is a positive outcome, but the investigation’s findings will be critical in preventing similar incidents in the future.
