Man Divorces Wife For Serving Him Instant Noodles Three Times A Day

A judge in Mysore, India, stated that a man had divorced his wife for cooking him noodles every day. The sessions-court judge, ML Raghunath, recounted this exact case at a press conference. Although he didn’t provide many details, he did state that he was the district judge in Ballari when this took place. Speaking about the rate of official separation in the country, the judge observed a transition. “Divorce cases are increasing drastically over the years. Couples have to stay together for at least a year before seeking divorce. If there was no such law, there would be divorce petitions filed directly from wedding halls.”[1]

He further stated in The New Indian Express, “We get divorce petitions more from urban areas than rural parts. In rural areas, village panchayats intervene and settle the problems. Women have no independence and their fear of society and family sentiments force them to cope with the situation. But in cities, women are educated and financially independent.” But then again, noodles can’t really be the most absurd reason for divorce, right? In Hyderabad, a man had taken legal action because his wife did not cook mutton for dinner.[2]

Man Divorces Woman Because She Cooked Him Maggi Every Day

In India, courts have been receiving divorce claims over the most trivial of things. Some of them include not talking with their partner- or putting too much salt in their food. In fact, some couples have even separated from each other for not getting the color of their suit right.

In this case, the man mentioned that his wife would purchase many packets of Maggi noodles. After this, she would cook him noodles for breakfast, lunch, and dinner throughout the entire marriage. In the end, the couple divorced with mutual consent, under the Special Marriage Act of 1954. Under this rule, divorce by mutual consent would require every party to live separately for a single year- and then agree to dissolve the marriage.

A professor at TISS in Mumbai informed The Hindustan Times that increased expectations were one of the reasons behind multiple separations. Shubhada Maitra informed that women in India have become more career-oriented, despite expectations of following traditional roles. “So, women bear double brunt, by working as an earning member of the family and at the same time also taking care of the household chores.

What do you think? Should people be separating over such menial things? Or is there deeper issues at play? Let us know in the comments!
