Mom slammed for making teenage daughter sign lease and pay monthly rent to live at home

The modern world is not the easiest place to be living in. There are so many things to keep in consideration, like housing and rental prices, cost of fuel, and just general cost of living. Life is expensive and seems to be getting worse. Parents are having to come up with creative ideas where they can teach their children to be responsible, even if they can’t afford to move out by themselves. One mother made her daughter sign a lease and pay rent to live at home. She thinks it’s a great idea, but the internet has other ideas.

Her daughter signed a lease to live at home

The mother in question is yet to be named. For now, she is the anonymous mother of 18-year-old Jada. They live together in Oklahoma. When Jada was given the option to move out and become independent, she chose rather to stay at home. Her mother was perfectly happy to have her stay at home. But, there was one condition she had to live by. She wanted Jada to sign a lease as if she were living independently, as well as pay rent. Jada was expected to pay about $100 in rent each month so that she could stay at home.

Jada’s mother posted a video of her daughter signing the lease on TikTok. She has the song, “Hard Knock Life,” from the musical, Annie. This makes a fitting song for the lesson her mother is clearly trying to teach her daughter. There is a text overlay on the clip which reads: “Setting up for success”.

The video was captioned: “When your 18-year-old decides to stay at home”. But, even thought it was viewed about 1.5million times, it did not receive as many positive remarks than what this mother initially thought.

People warned that a lease might be a bad idea

Of all thousands of viewers, most of the comments were expressing concern. They warned Jada’s mother that she might be damaging their relationship without realizing it. There were many comments where other people said they were made to do the same thing by their parents. But, it did not have a great effect on their bond as a family. You can see the video below:

One person mentioned in a comment that their parents also made them sign a lease. The comment read: “Yikes my parents did this to me and it only created trauma for me. Thankfully I made eight figures and don’t have to struggle any longer.”

Another person made a comparison to her own parents. They expressed their gratitude for having a “safe space” no matter her life’s situation. They wrote: “I’m so glad my parents provide a safe space for me unconditionally. I know I always have a place at home regardless of finances”. Another wrote: “My parents did this and we no longer talk! So, good luck I guess.”

There were some supportive comments

Not everyone disagreed 100% with Jada’s mom’s decisions. She also received some positive feedback from other mothers. Some of them saw it as a positive learning curve. They commented saying it will prepare her for when she has to pay rent for real. And not simply $100 per month. “Guys, it will prepare her for paying ACTUAL rent if she learns to pay mom ‘rent’ before she moves out!! It’s $100 a month. Come on”.

Other viewers gave her some creative ways to prevent the damage to their relationship. They supported her making Jada pay rent and sign a lease. However, they think she should keep the rent and save it for Jada for some point in her future. They said: “Take rent from her but save it all up and give it back to her once she moves out or gets married.”

In a video that followed the lease signing. Jada’s mom explained her reasons for making her daughter sign a lease. You can see the video above. In it, she said: “I was a single mum at 16 and my parents didn’t set me up for success. I had to fight for every single thing I have.“

She added: “And I don’t want my children to have to do that. So, everything I do prepares them for the real world.” She finished off by saying she doesn’t want her children to depend on her for anything.
