Since losing the trial in June 2022 Amber Heard has been spotted shopping at TJ Maxx, a discount store in the Hamptons. It’s no wonder she’s pinching pennies as she owes her now ex-husband Johnny Depp $8.4 million in damages.
Sources close to the “Aquaman” star reported that the 36-year-old actress is “broke”. Of course, as a result of hefty legal fees related to the trial. It was also reported that she was broke before she was ordered to pay millions for her defamatory statements. Once the judgment was given, Amber was asked if she had the means to cover the amount. In response, her lawyer Elaine Bedehoft replied, “Oh no, absolutely not”.
Amber spotted at TJ Maxx
Even after claiming she was broke, she was seen shopping at the TJ Maxx in Bridgehampton, NY – where houses are worth over $3.8 million. Heard was spotted wearing an oversized white button-down shirt and jeans while looking at clothes. She was also spotted with her sister, Whitney Henriquez, who not only stayed by her side during the entire trial but also testified on Amber’s behalf. It’s not yet clear if Heard actually bought anything from TJ Maxx.
There have been reports
Numerous sources have reported that Heard was relying on her homeowner’s insurance policy to cover her lawyer fees.
In a 2018 Washington, post-op-ed Heard claimed that Depp had abused her. Since then, her divorce has become a “public figure representing domestic abuse”. Depp then sued Amber for $50 million and successfully won all three of his defamation claims against her. She then counter-sued for $100 million which she won one of the three defamation claims she made against the “Pirates of the Caribbean” star in her counter sue.
According to the Celebrity Net Worth site, Depp’s net worth, before meeting and marrying Heard, was close to $650 million. Since then, it has dropped to about $150 million due to being canceled by movie production studios after the allegations and obvious legal fees since his divorce. Heard’s net worth is said to be between $1.5 million and $2.5 million. However, this is far less than what she now owes Depp.
Court testimony has revealed that the Aquaman star was paid $1 million for the first “Aquaman” movie which was released in 2018. Amber received another $2 million for the sequel which is set to premiere next year. Sources have also revealed that Heard’s role in the movie was significantly reduced after calls for her to be replaced were made by the public.
What did she do with her divorce settlement money?
During the trial, it became clear that Heard had lied about donating the $7 million divorce settlement which she received from Depp after their divorce in 2016 to the American Civil Liberties Union and the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles.
In the final hearing, the jury found that Depp should be given $10 million in compensatory damages and another $5 million in punitive damages. However, the judge reduced the amount of the punitive damages to $350,000.
Amber Heard has since said that she plans to appeal.
The Judge, Penney Azcarate responded to Amber’s plans to appeal. Azcarate said that if she does end up appealing, she will need to post a bond for the full $10.35 million owed to Depp while the appeal is pending. She also said that both amounts are subject to a 6% interest increase per year.
Divorce is almost never pretty and someone always ends up paying or shopping at TJ Maxx. The Depp vs Heard trial had millions of people watching in suspense. Everyone is waiting in suspense to see if Amber will abide by the judgment and pay Depp what is owed. Or, will she drag it out a little longer and appeal?
