Woman Asks if She was Wrong to Walk Out On Vacation After Husband Secretly Booked MIL to Come Along

Let’s be clear about one thing- you don’t bring your mother on a vacation with your wife! And seriously- this is common sense! After all, this period is for couples to enjoy themselves. While your mother is family, the situation gets quite weird. A wife did talk about this on r/AITA, where she actually walked off a vacation.

Interestingly, this wasn’t the only time when she had a problem with her MIL. According to her story, she was also compared to her own mother-in-law on several occasions. In fact, she even started copying what her daughter-in-law tried with her hair. While this would be seen as flattering- the change in attitude was quite frightening.

Wife’s Vacation Ruined By Mother-In-Law

“My husband and I took 2 weeks off work to go visit some places out of the country- tourism in other words. Thing is I was the one who saved up for and arranged for the trip. My husband’s mom wanted to come along and threw temper tantrums when I said no. She called, texted, sent people to talk to me into letting her come, even threatened to call the police and make some complaint to get us to stay if she can’t come. My husband said we should just take her but I told him he was wrong to tell her about the trip in the first place. He gave me an ultimatum and said he wouldn’t go if she can’t come and I told him I’d gladly call his bluff which made him take his words back.”

So far so good. At this point, it was assumed that things had settled down. The couple was on their way to their vacation and her mother-in-law had calmed down enough. But this only led to a curveball being thrown at her. When walking to the airport, she had an intuition that something was wrong. And sure enough, she saw her mother-in-law at the airport with her husband, which led to another argument.

“My husband tried to say I was overreacting and that his mom was there ‘anyway’ and I should let it go and not mess the trip for us. I told him he and his mom could still go and that I was going home. I went home and sobbed into my dog’s fur for several minutes. It turned out he had booked her a ticket without me knowing. An hour later he came home yelling and raging about how pathetic and spiteful I was to walk out and go home and ruin the trip last minute.”

Husband Takes Mother’s Side- Slightly Oedipal, As Reddit Thinks?

Here, one can simply glare at the temerity of the husband and the mother-in-law. And while we are all thinking about what we would have done with the vacation, Reddit gave its verdict.

u/PeanutButter_Toast_ responded,

“I don’t wanna call the divorce card but… divorce. You told your boundaries, you said no. She crossed it. Your husband told you he would tell her no, he lied. He tried to pin you in a corner by not saying anything and bringing her anyways and got upset you refused to be a part of his little trap? And then to berate you? He’s not a good man. He needs to go.”

u/Material_Cellist4133 reiterated the sentiment.

“This right here. I would divorce his a**. He lacks a backbone and the ability to stand by your side. Time to cut your losses and move on.”

u/qlanga was angry with her husband and MIL for all of us.

“Seriously, OP, the unfathomable audacity of these two jokers is beyond reproach. I don’t see how your relationship can possibly come back from this. You’ve generously tried to put up with what you can and communicate but…he’s made it abundantly clear that he values his dysfunctional relationship with his mom more than a potentially lovely relationship with you. He’s chosen his partner. Please don’t let him gaslight you into thinking that going behind your back, lying to your face, and flipping off your feelings was okay- the two of them ruined the trip YOU PAID FOR, you did the right thing when you walked away…you should keep walking, far away.”

Despite OP’s family telling her that she should have gone on the vacation regardless, it wasn’t fair. Her self-esteem and self-respect were not without value.

u/GreenThumbCottage summarized it properly for us.

“Your husband is the pathetic one, not you. Check out r/JUSTNOMIL and r/JustNoSo for better advice on how to navigate this. I would have looked him dead in the eye and said I want a divorce. He wants his mommy so much, he can marry her instead. Your hubby sounds like a boat steadier…”
