Old Lady Adopts Lost Little Boy with Note in His Pocket, His Mother Returns after 13 Years – a Short Story

Our story begins in the city of Nashville, the hometown of a woman named Sarah. She was a woman of humble means, who wanted nothing extravagant from life. For most of her life, she had yearned to have children of her own, but alas, she and her husband never succeeded. They had even considered going down the artificial insemination route, but then her husband, Michael was in a tragic accident that lead to his death. The grief that Sarah experienced was like nothing she had dealt with in her life she was very close with her husband, and their relationship was never strained nor lacked passion.

She never got over the loss of Michael, and she could not imagine bringing a child into this world with anyone else, or alone for that matter. Little did she know the hands of fate were working their magic, and the universe had other plans in store for her.

Fate Changed Sarah’s Life Forever

Sarah’s life was based on a routine in her later years. She had spent so many years by herself and had no one left in the world to care for her, aside from a few friends that lived quite far away. She had considered moving closer to them so she wouldn’t be so lonely all the time, but she could not bring herself to leave the house that she and her husband had shared when they were young. He could still feel him within the walls, so she stayed. Without realizing it, Sarah was miserable. She needed someone in her life to care for, and who might care for her in exchange.

One day, Sarah was running some errands out in town. She needed to update some prescriptions at the pharmacy, and her pantry needed restocking. She exited the pharmacy, she noticed a small boy standing by the door. His eyes were wide and puffy as if he had been crying. Sarah brushed it off and walked toward the parking meter to pay. He watched her as she got into her car, and Sarah looked back at him, her hands on the steering wheel. She thought to herself that there was something about this boy. She may never have had children, but her maternal instincts were as keen as ever.

Sarah walked up to the boy, and he gave a little sniffle. She knelt to be at his eye level and asked him where his mother was. He reached up to wipe his nose on his sleeve, and Sarah gave him a tissue from her purse. He told her that he didn’t know where his mother was as he had not seen her for a few days. Sarah suddenly noticed how dirty he was, raggedy shoes and all.

A Lunch Invitation Turned Into an Adoption

Sarah asked the little boy if he was hungry, and he nodded his head eagerly. She realized that the poor thing had probably not eaten in days. They went into a diner that Sarah frequented, and she ordered him a burger, fries, and a milkshake to complete the meal. She watched as he wolfed the food down, leaving not a single morsel on his plate. After finding out his name was Dylan, Sarah asked him a few questions about his mother, trying to find clues as to why he was alone. After She eventually concluded that his mother had abandoned him. If he were lost, there would be posters with his face all around town by now. This realization stirred something inside of Sarah, a dormant feeling, the need to care and protect.

Sarah took the boy back home with him, bathed him, and put him to sleep. She had contacted social services, and they were coming over in the morning after he had some rest. After a long investigation, they found the boy had not been registered, and his mother was not showing up to claim him. The court eventually awarded Sarah the permission to foster Dylan, and they lived together happily for He brought some life back into her home, and the silence was no longer deafening

Officially Adopted

A few years later, Dylan arrived from school and he walked into the house decorated with flowers, and balloons. Confused, Sarah knew it wasn’t his birthday for a few weeks still. She greeted him in the kitchen with a lavish meal laid out on the table. All of his favorite things were there. He started laughing in all the endearment, asking what all the fuss was about. She had some documents in his hand, and his heart skipped a beat when he saw they were adoption papers. Sarah wanted to adopt him. He signed them eagerly, hands shaking. He had not needed the adoption papers to consider Sarah his mom, she had been so loving and generous with him over the years.

A Big Decision to Make

Dylan’s 17th birthday had just passed. They were having quiet dinner at home, chatting together about the day’s events. The occasional laugh was heard from the streets, Dylan sure had a great sense of humor. There was a knock at the door, and Dylan got up to answer it. The woman he saw before him, made his whole world stop. There was his mother, his biological mother. She had returned to come to collect him. She explained how she had felt so guilty all these years for leaving him in the streets. She had married a millionaire and agreed that she could get her son back.

Dylan stood for a moment, contemplating the option he had just been given. He would be much richer with his mother and her millionaire husband who would be able to buy him a laptop, and a new phone. This might help him relate more to the kids at school. He turned to Sarah, who had tears in her eyes, but she was pretending like they were not there. She had been so good to him, the mother that his biological mom could not be. She had saved his life, quite literally. Everyone else had passed by him, but Sarah had noticed his sadness and despair.

He studied his estranged mother’s face, and he declined her offer. He told her that Sarah had been there when no one else would, and that was worth more to him than having fancy things. Sarah had saved his life when she had simply left him to starve on the streets. He was brutally honest, and his mother looked like each word was a slap in the face.

Dylan Took his Mother in

A few days later, his mother returned with an envelope. Inside there was a check for a sizeable fortune. She told him that was everything she had, and he was to make a good life for himself. This was all she could do for him as his mother, and she wanted to see him before she went back to her husband.

Dylan was not sure what to do with so much money, he wanted nothing to do with it as he saw it as guilt money from a woman who abandoned him. He put the check aside to make plans for later. Not long after she had left, his mother was back at their doorstep. She claimed that her husband had suddenly turned on her when she told him that she had given her savings to her son. He kicked her out that night with nothing and filed for a divorce. She had signed a prenup, so she would get nothing. She looked desperate, and the empathy that Sarah had raised Dylan with made him feel terrible for her, but he could not forget that she had done the same to him.

She remained Close to Both Dylan and Sarah

He told her she knew what it feels like to be abandoned, but he would never do the same to her. He glanced at Sarah, his real mom, she knew what he was going to do. Dylan took a step back and opened their door a little wider, gesturing for his biological mom to come inside. Sarah invited her to stay with them until she found her feet again, and even found a job for her at the diner she first took Dylan to.

Dylan’s mother was an interesting woman, but oddly, Dylan found many similarities between them. Once she had saved up enough money for herself (the first time in her life earning her own money) she rented a small apartment, not too far from where Dylan and Sarah lived. They remained close to each other, and Dylan was glad to have both of his mothers in his life.
